Blue Marble

On December 7 1972 the crew of Apollo 17 captured the famous and moving photograph of a tiny, blue planet floating in space - like a lonely blue marble. For the first time it was clear just how unique, fragile and vulnerable our planet is.

Blue Marble Polymers has developed new technologies that will help preserve the future of the fragile and small blue marble that we live on.

In particular, Blue Marble Polymers has developed a novel biodegradable packaging technology where starch is transformed into a thermoplastic resin and then into moulded foam packaging shapes suitable for the protective packaging market.

The fusion of starch, extrusion, moulding and microwave heating technologies has resulted in a highly innovative process for producing moulded foam packaging.

Development of this exciting technology commenced in 1998. Years of intensive development work has produced a technology protected by a range of patents and trade secrets. Blue Marble Polymers has licensed the technology to Novamont Spa of Italy, and it is a core technology of the Rebiofoam project.
